Corsham Walking Festival opening ceremony started at 13:15 pm on 9th June at Springfield Community Campus, Beechfield Road, SN13 9DN.

Walk FRI 1: Canals, Lacock and the Ladbrook – SOLD OUT!

This first walk of the 2017 Festival starts in Chippenham, then proceeds to the towpath of the partly restored Wilts & Berks Canal, where we meet an expert at the Pewsham Locks. Continuing to the historic National Trust village of Lacock, we break for lunch and a short tour by the Lacock History Group. We then follow the Ladbrook back to Corsham. Public toilets are available in Lacock.
There is a frequent bus service between Corsham and Chippenham – the X31.

Walk FRI 2: Hartham Unwrapped and Weavern – SOLD OUT!

This walk offers a unique opportunity to see the Hartham Park estate, not normally open to the public. We approach along the 1760’s old Brickers Barn Turnpike Road to enjoy a tour of Hartham Park, grounds and stické tennis court. Departing the estate, we pass through Church Farm fields and Weavern, then ascend to Rudloe Manor before returning to the Campus. By kind permission of Hartham Park and Church Farm. (NB: Dogs are not permitted in Hartham Park grounds.)

Walk FRI 3: Corsham Quarry Tramways – SOLD OUT!

The town of Corsham was founded on weaving and stone-mining – here is an opportunity to learn about its important industrial heritage. The walk explores the remains of the Corsham quarry tramways and former quarry sites, and includes several stiles. Led by an expert, it will prove intriguing for those interested in industrial history. Quarry Tramways is usually the most popular walk of the Festival, so you will need to be quick off the mark on April 3rd to book your place.

Walk SAT 1: Over the Hills and Far Away – SOLD OUT!

This longer distance walk passes through the villages of Slaughterford, Ford and Long Dean picking up the national trail – the Macmillan Way. This follows the route of the By Brook to Castle Combe, once voted the prettiest village in England and notable as the set for several well-known films. Following a short break we head towards Nettleton, from where we start our return journey via the unspoilt village of North Wraxall, towards Thickwood, near Colerne. Our ramble descends sharply to the atmospheric, derelict Weavern Farm in its beautiful valley. The trail then rises back to Corsham via Pickwick Lodge Farm.

Walk SAT 2: Exploring a Wildflower Meadow – SOLD OUT!

Walk with a wildflower enthusiast to explore a beautiful summer meadow,Chapel Plaister Common – an area of increasingly rare unimproved limestone grassland, home to many plant and insect species. We expect to find several native orchids, yellow rattle and common broomrape, among many others. Discover the significance of these plants to our ancestors as well as their botanical features and curious names.

Walk SAT 3: Hidden Valleys, Woods and Panoramas – SOLD OUT!

This walk is from Corsham to Colerne and return, passing through the beautiful Weavern Valley, past Euridge and Widdenham. A hilly cross-country walk with excellent views and numerous stiles. The routes uses rights of way across farmland, through old woodlands and along quiet country lanes. A walking pole is recommended. Toilets are available half way through the walk. Bring a packed lunch.

A short walk from the Campus to Corsham Court’s beautiful parkland and lake where we will walk in silence without hurrying, noticing our thoughts, body sensations and sounds around us. No meditation experience is required. We will finish at Church House where there will be time for a cup of tea and questions about Mindfulness.

Walk SAT 5: God’s Wonderful Railway, Brunel and Box Tunnels – SOLD OUT!

Linear walk to Box with wonderful views. At Box Hill we descend into the valley. We are joined by a railway enthusiast for an informative talk about the famous Box Tunnels and GWR. Please make own arrangements from Box back to Corsham.
There is a frequent bus service between Corsham and Box on the X31 bus.

Walk SAT 6: The Neston Paths Less Travelled – SOLD OUT!

This interesting and attractive circular walk takes us over Neston Ridge, revealing panoramic unspoilt views towards Westbury White Horse and beyond. Our route then crosses a Roman Road and passes remains of the quarrying and stone mining industries. On street parking is available near Neston Primary School.

Walk SAT 7: Children’s Treasure Hunt

A self-guided treasure hunt encouraging young people to discover the High Street and Corsham Park in a novel and enjoyable way. For children and their families, hunting via flat pavements from the Campus to the High Street. Answers to treasure hunt on return to the Campus where participants will be awarded a certificate and small gift. You may wish to take photos of your own children enjoying the hunt. You can then email your favourite images to our sponsors Haine & Smith.

Answer sheets will be sent out after the weekend. Prizes for the highest scoring team kindly donated by Auttomatic Comics and Toys of Corsham.

An ideal opportunity to socialise over the festival weekend – the fun quiz is open to both walkers and non-walkers.  Bring your own team (max 6 people) or join a team on the night to compete for The Golden Boots plus prizes donated by local businesses.

This year we are delighted to have live music by Akrat, a jazz band from Corsham School.  An award winning short documentary filmed at Brown’s Folly by local students will also be screened. This promises to be great festival evening and strong demand for tickets is expected.

Includes a delicious buffet supper by award-winning Elior Catering www.elior.co.uk.  Special dietary needs can be catered for, but please notify in advance to web@corshamwalkingfestival.org.uk.  A paying bar is available for soft drinks, tea and coffee. Walk SUN 1: Climbing Up on Solsbury Hill – SOLD OUT!

This exquisite 20 mile long circular walk to Little Solsbury passes through diverse and beautiful countryside with impressive hilltop views. The varied terrain includes meadow, woodland, hills, fields, river and canal paths. We climb Bannerdown as well as Little Solsbury and the total ascent is about 600 m. The song by local musician, Peter Gabriel celebrates this wonderful spot.

Suitable for those who have previously walked hilly routes of at least fifteen miles.

Walk SUN 2: Explorer & Medieval Pilgrims – SOLD OUT!

From the western fringes of Corsham, we walk to Neston then Lower Wadswick, pausing at the memorial to Captain J.H. Speke to learn of his exploits during two expeditions to Africa seeking the source of the Nile. We then continue to the tiny 13th century pilgrims’ chapel at Chapel Plaister for a talk about the changing fortunes of this former roadside haven for pilgrims travelling to Glastonbury. This beautiful country walk with occasional far-reaching views, provides an excellent opportunity to understand some unique aspects of local history. Bring a packed lunch.

High quality limestone was mined in the Corsham area in Roman times, and still is today. An expert on the history of Box Hill stone mines will explain their role in the area’s industrial heritage. Walk SUN 4: Castle Combe’s Babbling Brooks and Reserve Revealed – SOLD OUT!

Accompanied by a Cotswold Voluntary Warden, this circular walk makes for an interesting day, including a unique opportunity to visit a nature reserve not normally open to the public. We venture along the wooded valley of the Burton Brook to the hamlets of Nettleton and West Kington. Our return route includes the Broadmead Brook, a clapper style bridge and Nettleton Mill, then back to the dreaming Cotswold village of Castle Combe, often described as the prettiest village in England. Walk SUN 5: The Folly of Rocks and Fossils – SOLD OUT!

A circular walk leaving Box and climbing to Brown’s Folly, a nature reserve covering almost 100 acres. It sits high on the skyline above Bath allowing spectacular views towards the city. The reserve is owned by Avon Wildlife Trust and been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its wildlife, bats, plants and geology. We stop here for lunch where an eminent geologist will explain some features of this remarkable area, its geology and mines.

This is the accessible, well-established and popular heritage tour of the historic town centre. An expert guides us from St Bartholomew’s Church, along the High Street to the Almshouses and the grounds of Corsham Court. The architecture of Corsham’s gem of a town centre will reveal many stories from its past.
