Corsham Wanderers

First Steps

In the autumn of 2008 a walk from Corsham to Lacock led to the founding of the Corsham Wanderers. An invitation to join me on this ramble was placed in Corsham & Box Matters magazine and, much to my surprise, 17 walkers attended! After rambling with groups in Wiltshire and Bath I wanted to see if Corsham could support my ambition of starting a walking group here, in my home town of over 65 years. At this early stage I was the only walk leader and the group walked every two months, giving me time to recce each ramble. After a year a few members kindly volunteered to lead, and to this day we encourage and mentor new walk leaders for our regular monthly walks.

Wanderers on Tour

The group has enjoyed eleven annual holidays in the Lake District. The above photo is of the inaugural party of 3 back in May 2009. Our wanderings have included a weekend in the Peak District and day trips to Exmoor, the Brecon Beacons, Lulworth Cove and Studland. Unfortunately the planned European walking holiday to Portugal in 2020, the Wanderers first overseas adventure, was cancelled due to the pandemic. However 18 of the group have re-booked to go in the Autumn 2021.

Corsham Walking Festival

In late 2013 Colin Craddock, leader of St Bart’s Church Walking Group, invited Mike Caffrey, a walk leader with Corsham Wanderers, and myself, Pete Smith, to a meeting with Corsham Town Council to discuss the possibility of organising a one day pilot walking festival in June 2014. At this meeting the Town Council was very interested in attaining ‘Walkers are Welcome’ national accreditation, which was subsequently granted in 2014.

This first Corsham Walking Festival consisted of eight walks. It was a great success, owing much to Corsham Wanderers members who, now as experienced leaders, volunteered to lead and back mark festival walks. We have continued to actively support Corsham Walking Festival, providing leaders, Committee members and organisers – ensuring the festival is a successful annual event, and an essential part of Corsham’s Festival Fortnight.

Join In

We are a very sociable, friendly group and welcome all newcomers to join us on our free monthly walks – normally on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the beautiful countryside near Corsham, and beyond in Wiltshire and Somerset.

In view of the pandemic the 2021 walking programme is very much likely to be interrupted due to local lockdown restrictions. Under normal circumstances car sharing is available from Corsham and walks usually finish at a country pub for refreshments.

A bi-monthly newsletter is emailed to all the Wanderers every 2 months. Click HERE to view the latest newsletter.

Please email if you wish to subscribe to receive the e-Newsletter and other notices regarding the confirmation of walks.
